Turn on 5G: Ericsson Completes 5G Platform for Operators

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) finalizes 5G-readiness for operators by enhancing its 5G Platform with new solutions for the radio and core network.

Today, the company launches 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) commercial software, based on the recently approved first 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) standard. It also introduces a new category of radio products called Street Macro ? a new site type that addresses the need of operators to grow in cities with limited available radio locations.

To capture growth opportunities presented by new 5G use cases, Ericsson expands its 5G Core System offering with new capabilities to support 5G NR and also enhances its Distributed Cloud solution.

Ericsson introduced its 5G Platform in February 2017 with additions made in September the same year. It comprises the 5G core, radio, and transport portfolios together with OSS/BSS, network services and security.

Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Area Networks at Ericsson, says: "Operators who want to be early with 5G now have the essential pieces for launching 5G networks already this year. With our expanded platform, they will get more efficient networks as well as opportunities to create new revenues from emerging consumer and industrial use cases."

Giovanni Ferigo, CTO, TIM, says: "Ericsson is an important enabler of our 5G in-field innovation activities that span several cities in Italy. Together, last December ? marking an Italian record - we activated a 5G NR cell in the mmW frequencies in the city of Torino, reaching speeds above 20Gbps. We are looking forward to testing Ericsson's new solutions that will contribute to address the wide variety of use cases we are working on."

5G software ? enabling first-movers to launch 5G

Available in the fourth quarter of 2018, Ericsson's 5G radio network software provides multi-band support for global deployment. It will allow operators to use new frequency spectrum as it becomes available.

The 5G radio network software announced today complements Ericsson's already launched baseband and 5G radios. Operators can simply activate their 5G networks and take the first steps with commercial 5G capabilities and new applications leveraging advanced mobile broadband services.

This will cater efficiently for growing data traffic and enable access to multimedia content, such as 4K/8K video streaming and virtual reality/augmented reality. According to Ericsson's new economic study of enhanced mobile broadband, evolution to 5G will enable 10 times lower cost per gigabyte than current 4G.

The radio offering is complemented with 5G Core commercial software optimized for 5G throughput, network capacity and scalability. Ericsson's Packet Core and Unified Data Management solutions will deliver enhancements throughout 2018 to efficiently support 5G services. These solutions can be further upgraded with new functionalities as the 3GPP 5G standard evolves.

Ericsson Distributed Cloud ? accelerating 5G and IoT growth

Ericsson also evolves its Distributed Cloud offering for cloud application deployment across multiple sites - central, distributed, and edge. Managed, orchestrated, and perceived as one solution, it improves latency, security, and resilience, and fulfils regulatory requirements for 5G-enabled use cases. Ericsson Distributed Cloud combines the best of telecom and cloud to enable networks as open cloud platforms for all workloads, including telecom, consumer, and enterprise applications.

As part of the Ericsson Distributed Cloud, Ericsson will support deployments of hardware options in a multi-vendor framework. With fast deployable telecom-grade open software for remote upgrade and operation, Ericsson brings Software Defined Infrastructure (SDI) to the edge. To support efficient deployment of cloud native applications, Ericsson also expands the offering with support for containers in a distributed cloud infrastructure.

Radio portfolio expanded ? supporting smooth evolution from 4G to 5G

Ericsson adds a new category of radio products for cities, which it calls Street Macro ? a new layer between macro and micro. These radios will be on building facades with a smaller footprint but the necessary strength to secure network efficiency and coverage.

Furthermore, the company unveils new radio products supporting Massive MIMO technology. These products enable a smooth evolution from 4G to 5G and address the need for increased capacity, while simplifying use for wider adoption.

All installed base radios from the Ericsson Radio System delivered since 2015 will be 5G NR-capable by a remote software installation.

Ed Gubbins, Senior Analyst, Global Telecom Technology & Software, at GlobalData, says: "The combination of Ericsson's new products and 5G support for radios already deployed in the field will give operators access to a very broad and flexible 5G portfolio. They will be able to move quickly into enhanced mobile broadband and address the new opportunities with industrial applications."

Roberto Kompany, Senior Analyst at Analysys Mason says: "Reduced latency, improved throughput, better security, reliability and regulatory compliance are all critical capabilities that operators must deliver for 5G use cases such as augmented reality, assisted factory and autonomous driving vehicles. A distributed cloud capability that enables cloud computing, storage and networking to be placed flexibly in central, regional and edge locations and which can be managed seamlessly, end-to-end, is an important component of a 5G platform."

Installed Ericsson Radio System Products Ready for 5G NR

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ --

  • All radio products within Ericsson Radio System delivered since 2015 will support 5G New Radio (NR) capability through remote software installation
  • Enables fast and smooth migration to 5G in existing bands, as well as fast coverage expansion of 5G services for operators

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) announces today its installed base of radio products from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio will be able to run 5G New Radio (NR). This capability will be achieved through a remote software installation.

This applies to more than 150 different radio variants in Ericsson Radio System that are active in more than 190 networks around the world, meaning that Ericsson Radio System legacy radios from 2015 can support 5G NR. This 5G NR readiness also applies to Ericsson's delivered micro radios in Ericsson Radio System and existing Radio Dot System products. In short, all Ericsson Radio System products are ready for 5G NR.

Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Area Networks, Ericsson, says: "We have a long history of strong backwards compatibility and our products and software are built for evolution ? with Ericsson, there is no need to rip and replace. Investments in Ericsson Radio System since 2015 will continue to bring operators value when the time is right to transition to 5G."

Daniel Staub, Head of Joint Mobile Group, Swisscom, says: "Today's news means that we can launch 5G services more efficiently with our future-proofed Ericsson Radio System products ? significantly boosting the long-term value of our network assets."

Operators will have the possibility to run 4G and 5G in the same band with the same radio and the same baseband. It will also be possible to share the spectrum between 4G and 5G with side-by-side carriers in the same band, and even with overlapping carriers using so-called 'Dynamic Spectrum Sharing' functionality.

According to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report, total global mobile data traffic is expected to grow eight times, while 5G subscriptions are forecast to reach 1 billion by the end of 2023. This puts increasing demand on operators to continue to expand capacity cost efficiently while addressing their 5G evolution at the same time.

IFS Offers New Product Functionality to Support GDPR Compliance

LINKÖPING, Sweden, Feb 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- IFS, the global enterprise applications company, announces that new functionality has been released for IFS Applications? to support General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance. The enhancements to IFS Applications empower IFS customers with important capabilities that facilitate compliance with the new regulation, which comes into effect on May 25, 2018. A similar update for IFS Field Service Management? will be released in Q1 2018.

GDPR compliance is supported by the new functionality that is included in IFS Applications 9 as of update 10 and onward, which is available now. Similar functionality will support IFS Field Service Management 5.7 from update 3 and onward from late Q1 2018.

The new functionality will support compliance with GDPR requirements through all the key processes related to personal data management:

  1. Lawful collection: According to GDPR, personal data is to be collected solely for specific defined purposes and only stored for as long as necessary for such purposes. The new functionality facilitates this by allowing each data subject to be identified and have one or more defined purposes for personal information processing attached to them, including durations, where each can be associated with one or more lawful basis for processing.
  2. Secure storage: Personal data must be entered and stored securely within systems used for its processing and in accordance with the access permissions necessary for the purpose for which it has been collected. Complementing the existing mechanisms for role-based data access, the new functionality facilitates this by providing a set of dedicated mechanisms and windows facilitating management of data subjects, personal information items, purpose of data processing, data removal and anonymization, and date-controlled consent.
  3. Secure recall/relay: Having the ability to recall and relay the data is an essential component of GDPR compliance. The new functionality facilitates this by introducing a new standard report which can be run for a specific data subject recorded within IFS Applications or IFS Field Service Management, and outputs relevant information including all data held, the purposes for which the data is held with relevant expiration dates and the legal basis to which the data and purposes comply.
  4. Secure maintenance/removal: Three of the key requirements under GDPR are to maintain up to date records, the right of the data subject to be forgotten, and the need for the data controller to retain records for lawful purposes other than consent. The new functionality facilitates this by providing capabilities to support data maintenance processes. It provides the data controller with the possibility to clean up data, remove, or anonymize it (as appropriate), depending on the data subject's preference or the expiration of the data retention period.
  5. Lawful usage: Holding personal data in the system and being able to recall, report and remove data when required is essential and all of it relies on correct setup, maintenance and usage of personal information which in turn is reliant upon ease of access, visualization of data and the ability to be informed. The new functionality facilitates this by providing a single entry point to access and control the purposes and basis for processing.

"By enhancing IFS Applications and IFS Field Service Management with GDPR compliance support, we offer our customers integrated and intuitive software functionality to facilitate compliance with the new regulations that enter into force in May this year," said Steve Treagust, Global Industry Director of Finance, HCM and Strategy at IFS. "In addition to supporting GDPR compliance, the new capabilities will also enable companies to improve data management processes to enhance data quality with more relevant data, and reduce the quantity of irrelevant data, resulting in significant cost reductions."

Read more about GDPR compliance on the IFS Blog.
