IBM Watson Group Invests in Fluid to Transform the Consumer Shopping ExperienceWatson Group Invests in Fluid, Inc. to Advance New App into the Marketplace That Empowers Online Shoppers with Watson's Expertise and Personalized Advice

ARMONK, N.Y., April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Imagine having access to your own personal shopping assistant anytime, anywhere. Thanks to a partnership between IBM and Fluid Inc., the ultimate shopping advisor, powered by Watson, is poised to transform the consumer shopping experience.

Together, IBM and Fluid Inc., are working to redefine today's e-commerce experience by evolving it beyond the traditional criteria of price, convenience and selection, and adding a transformational new factor: the expertise and personalized advice of an in-store sales representative.

The consumer shopping experience is ripe for Watson's ability to interact naturally with people, while serving as an advisor that thinks, learns and empowers its users with insights unlocked from data. A recent study from the IBM Institute for Business Value of more than 30,000 global consumers shows that 40 percent of shoppers use social, location and mobile technologies for information gathering, and yet are not likely to use them to purchase products.

So what is hindering that sizable share of the consumer market from making purchase decisions from their devices? To start, the current state of online and mobile shopping yields a time-consuming, inefficient experience, as consumers comb through websites for information, link by link, or enter keywords into search engines and hope for the best. Today, 50 percent of consumers spend 75 percent or more of their total shopping time conducting online research, according to data from the e-tailing group and PowerReviews.

Something crucial is missing from the typical online and mobile experience: the thoughtful help of an expert sales representative, who is knowledgeable, relatable and ready to advise you on important purchase decisions.

All of that is about the change. IBM and Fluid Inc., are embarking on a new mission to transform the way consumers shop, through personalized, digital experiences with a personal shopping concierge that understands and advises its users on key purchase decisions. IBM and Fluid's collaboration aims to spark an "industry first," as together they remove the pain points of digital commerce, and replace them with the best of what in-store retail shopping has always offered.

The solution: the Fluid Expert Shopper (XPS) made with IBM Watson, an app that gives consumers the power to ask the app highly specific questions, as they would a sales associate in a store, and receive personalized advice that truly satisfies their needs.

In partnership with The North Face and other consumer brands, Fluid XPS will take advantage of Watson's ability to answer consumers' questions and learn from their responses, engage in real-time conversations and then tailor suggestions for products in a rich and relevant manner. Watson will understand the context of its users' questions, and continuously learn about their needs based on the information they share.

As an example, one could ask Watson for advice on what outdoor gear is best-suited for a five-day, June hiking adventure in Phoenix. Fluid XPS would call upon Watson's understanding of natural language to identify clues from the user's question suggesting particular needs around weather, terrain and trail conditions.

When complete, Fluid XPS will draw on data, including the brand's product information, user reviews and online expert publications through IBM Watson, to provide consumers with informed recommendations according to their needs and desires. Consumers will receive valuable insights in making smart, satisfying purchases and be able to interact with Watson on desktops, tablets and smartphones for the first time.

To further advance this new e-commerce dynamic, the Watson Group is today announcing a new milestone in its collaboration with Fluid, to ensure they can go to market faster and bring their vision to life in a range of markets. Drawing from $100 million that IBM has earmarked for direct investments to fuel a new class of cognitive apps, the Watson Group is making an investment in Fluid, Inc., to help deliver the first-ever cognitive assistant for online shoppers into the marketplace.

In creating an app that interacts naturally with users, understands the context within their needs and learns to improve how it provides assistance from a user's mobile device, IBM and Fluid are tapping into a crucial, yet unmet marketplace need.

"By tapping into IBM Watson's cognitive intelligence, Fluid is infusing the personalized, interactive feel of an in-store conversation into every digital shopping interaction," said Mike Rhodin, Senior Vice President, IBM Watson Group. "This is what positive market disruption looks like, and it's a key example of how a new era of cognitive applications will revolutionize how decisions are made by consumers and businesses alike."

With a vision to forever transform the online and mobile commerce space, IBM and Fluid aim to bring back the era of personalized customer service, by accelerating the consumer shopping experience into a new era of cognitive computing.

"Fluid and IBM are purposely involving consumers in this new era of computing. An era in which people no longer type best-guess keywords into a retail website's search box and hope for meaningful results; instead people ask specific questions based on explicit needs and get expert, personalized, information-driven responses to guide buying decisions. This is the same experience we have in real-world stores with great sales reps every day and is what's missing from digital retail," said Kent Deverell, CEO, Fluid, Inc.

Fluid was one of the first organizations to join IBM's ecosystem of developers, entrepreneurs and growth companies of all sizes that are building apps and services infused with Watson's cognitive computing intelligence. As a Watson Ecosystem partner, Fluid is creating its cognitive technology in the Watson Developer Cloud, which provides a toolkit and sandbox for building cognitive apps, as well as access to Watson's Application Programming Interface (API).

Pioneering a New Era of Computing and Spurring Innovation

IBM Watson represents a new era of computing, in which apps and systems interact with human users more naturally, augment our knowledge with Big Data insights, and learn to improve how they assist us.

Fueled by innovation from a mission to transform industries and professions, Watson is uniquely positioned at the forefront of the new era of computing, evidenced by an unmatched demonstration of what cognitive systems can bring to transform decision-making. IBM is delivering a range of cloud-based products and services to clients in industries such as banking, healthcare, insurance and retail.

In January, 2014, IBM launched the IBM Watson Group, a new business unit dedicated to the development and commercialization of cloud-delivered cognitive advisors. The move signifies a strategic shift by IBM to accelerate into the marketplace a new class of software, services and apps that think, improve by learning, and discover insights from massive amounts of Big Data.

IBM is investing more than $1 billion into the Watson Group, focusing on research, development and bringing cloud-delivered cognitive applications and services to market. This includes $100 million earmarked for direct investment to support IBM's ecosystem of start-ups and businesses building cognitive apps made with Watson. Currently more than 1,900 organizations and entrepreneurial individuals have shared their ideas for creating cognitive apps that redefine how businesses and consumers make decisions.

General Dynamics Opens New Radio Testing Laboratory for MUOS Satellite-Ground Station Communications

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- General Dynamics C4 Systems has opened the MUOS Radio Testing Lab at its Scottsdale, Ariz., location. The U.S. Navy-approved laboratory is one of two that supports testing for radio-terminals intending to connect with the MUOS space-ground network. The lab is equipped with hardware and software that simulates the radio's connectivity with the MUOS ground network.

"The MUOS Radio Testing Lab in Scottsdale will help the U.S. military and government to cost-effectively and efficiently add MUOS-capable radios to their communications network," said Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems. "This brings this critical operational capability even closer to being available to military and government personnel."

To test connectivity with the MUOS system, radios are provisioned with the General Dynamics-developed MUOS waveform to make secure voice calls and complete data transmissions at different data rates across the simulated MUOS network. The MUOS waveform, housed in the government waveform information repository, leverages the widely-used commercial Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) cell phone technology.

The first terminal to receive government authorization and enter the Scottsdale lab was Rockwell Collins' ARC-210 radio that began testing in March. Companies interested in accessing the General Dynamics C4 Systems MUOS Radio Testing Lab must first contact and receive approval from the Navy's Communications Satellite Program office, PMW 146, to authorize access to the test facility.

Travelzoo Partners with Open Arms to Build Computer Classroom for Malawi Children

NEW YORK, April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Travelzoo Inc. , a global Internet media company, announced it is partnering with Open Arms, a nonprofit organization that provides care for orphaned children in Malawi, to build a computer classroom for the charity's five foster homes. Travelzoo is sending its recycled computer equipment with a small team of Travelzoo staff later this month, to equip the classroom and provide training.

Open Arms provides medical care, shelter, food, education and love for abandoned and orphaned children ages newborn to 13 years old. Malawi has more than one million orphans due to the country's high maternal mortality rate. As well as two infant homes, Open Arms operates five foster homes, which each house up to seven children from age 5 and up. The need for the new computers initially came from a foster child named Aubrey, who contracted cerebral palsy at birth. Aubrey has difficulty writing but is capable of using a computer keyboard. Access to a computer means he can learn to write and will widen his career options for the future.

"Open Arms is an inspiring place where children are given love, nourishment and medical care," said Gretchen Johnson, senior vice president for human resources at Travelzoo. "We're thrilled to help Open Arms' mission of providing a better education and future for the children."

"The children currently learn in an improvised, small space, and the new computer room will make a difference in how they learn," said Judith Rudolph, trustee for Open Arms. "We're very excited that Travelzoo is donating their equipment and time to our cause. As you can see from Aubrey's story, the equipment is essential for providing a better education and better future for the children."

Elsevier Embraces EPUB3 Format, Ensuring More Enriched and Interactive eBook Experience for Readers

    AMSTERDAM, April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

EPUB3, the most advanced eBook format, will provide readers with a more

    immersive, multi-media eBook experience

Elsevier [ ], a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, will move its new eBooks to EPUB3, becoming the first major STM publisher to commit to the latest, most advanced eBook format available.

By moving to EPUB3, Elsevier's eBooks will be able to take advantage of the format's ability to provide multi-media and interactive experiences within eBooks. Elsevier currently publishes more than 25,000 eBooks in a variety of formats.

"Elsevier's adoption of EPUB3 is a very important milestone in the advancement of the next-generation portable document standard based on HTML5 and the Open Web Platform," said Bill McCoy, Executive Director, International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). "The IDPF looks forward to working with Elsevier and the STM publishing ecosystem to ensure that EPUB continues to evolve to meet critical needs in communicating scientific and technical content with accessibility for all, on any device."

Even though the current eBook market faces some challenges to making EPUB3 work, Elsevier has moved forward with the upgrade from EPUB2 to EPUB3 to ensure that readers continue to receive the enriched customer experience they require and have come to expect, particularly as readers upgrade their electronic devices and demand more.

"EPUB3 is a giant leap ahead of EPUB2, the most widely used current format," said Adriaan Roosen, Executive Vice President, Global Operations, Elsevier. "This move will ensure that Elsevier eBooks will be prepared to meet reader demands for more interactivity in the future."

    The EPUB3 upgrade will provide:

    - Support for audio, video and built-in interactive elements, like quizzes, self-assessments, etc. - Improved table of contents: more granular for better navigation, adding lists and elements (for instance, a list with all tables or graphics in the book) - Improved viewing of footnotes, citation, and references - click on or hover over a reference and the reference pops up instead of taking you away from the page to the location of the reference - Support for MathML - mathematical formulas are no longer pictures, but are text - Improved accessibility features

Elsevier's EPUB3 files render well on EPUB2 devices, which will "see" Elsevier's EPUB3 eBooks as EPUB2 files.

"We're recognizing a clear trend to make content more media-rich as well as accessible," Roosen said. "As sales of tablets exceed those of PCs, we see the market for enhanced eBooks growing, so there clearly is an opportunity for Elsevier in this area."

Brown University offers Office 365 to students at no additional cost through Microsoft Student AdvantageStudents can download full set of Office applications, providing them with skills needed after graduation.

REDMOND, Wash., April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Brown University has selected Microsoft Office 365 for its students, and is using the Microsoft Student Advantage benefit to extend the service to its student body at no additional cost using their existing Brown credentials. Available since Jan. 1, Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus gives Brown's approximate 8,600 students the tools they need to complete coursework from any device while in school and compete in the job market after graduation.

Until now, students who wished to use Office had to purchase it for themselves or rely on third-party programs that didn't always sync well with one another. Office on the Windows platform offers students a full enterprise experience, but many students use a variety of devices, such as iPhones, iPads, PCs and desktop computers, so Brown needed a unified solution that would provide students with the same, robust experience no matter what device they are using. Microsoft Student Advantage, which launched Dec. 1, 2013, enables academic institutions that license Office for staff and faculty to provide Office 365 ProPlus for students at no additional cost.

"When our chief information officer heard about Student Advantage, he wanted us to make it available to students as quickly as possible, and we were able to extend the service to students in about one month," said Geoffrey Greene, director of IT Support Services, Brown University. "Students have been champing at the bit for this, and faculty have frequently asked us to help students get the solution, so it's a great benefit for everyone. Plus, a lot of our students use laptops, iPhones and other devices, so Office 365 was the perfect solution for us."

Extending the Office 365 service to students helps Brown ensure that students have the technical tools they need to succeed in their classes, and that their software is always up to date. The Daily Herald student blog helped alert students to the new offering in time for the start of the new semester.

"The Microsoft Student Advantage is an incredible opportunity for all students to gain access to the Office programs," said Sazzy Gourley, student at Brown University. "Especially for incoming first-years, or for those who are purchasing new computers, Microsoft Student Advantage makes accessible the technology students need to be academically successful."

More information about how organizations are turning to Microsoft technology is available on the Microsoft Customer Spotlight newsroom.

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq "MSFT") is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

Altera Changes the Game for Floating Point DSP in FPGAsAltera Announces Industry's First IEEE 754-compliant Hardened Floating-point DSP Blocks in Currently Shipping Arria 10 FPGAs

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Altera Corporation today changed the game as it relates to floating-point DSP performance in an FPGA. Altera is the first programmable logic company to integrate hardened IEEE 754-compliant, floating-point operators in an FPGA, delivering unparalleled levels of DSP performance, designer productivity and logic efficiency. The hardened floating point DSP blocks are integrated in Altera's 20 nm Arria 10 FPGAs and SoCs - currently shipping - as well as 14 nm Stratix 10 FPGAs and SoCs. Integrated hardened floating-point DSP blocks, combined with an advanced high-level tool flow, enable customers to use Altera's FPGAs and SoCs to address an expanding range of computationally intensive applications, such as high-performance computing (HPC), radar, scientific and medical imaging.

The hardened single-precision floating point DSP blocks included in Arria 10 and Stratix 10 devices are based on Altera's innovative variable precision DSP architecture. Unlike traditional approaches that implement floating point by using fixed point multipliers and FPGA logic, Altera's resource efficient, hardened floating point DSP blocks eliminate nearly all the logic usage required for existing FPGA floating-point computations. This game-changing technology enables Altera to deliver up to 1.5 TeraFLOPs (floating point operations per second) DSP performance in Arria 10 devices and up to 10 TeraFLOPs DSP performance in Stratix 10 devices. DSP designers are able to choose either fixed or floating-point modes and the floating point blocks are backwards compatible with existing designs.

"The implementation of IEEE 754-compliant floating-point DSP blocks in our devices is truly a game-changer for FPGAs," said Alex Grbic, director of software, IP and DSP marketing at Altera. "With hardened floating point, Altera FPGAs and SoCs offer a performance and power efficiency advantage over microprocessors and GPUs in an expanded range of applications."

    FPGAs Deliver the Highest Performance-per-Watt

FPGAs feature a fine-grained, highly pipelined architecture that make them ideally suited for use as high-performance compute accelerators. The inclusion of hardened floating-point DSP blocks enable customers to use Altera FPGAs to address the world's most complex HPC problems in big data analytics, seismic modeling for oil and gas industries and financial simulations. Across these and many other computationally intensive applications, FPGAs deliver the highest performance per Watt when compared to DSPs, CPUs and GPUs.

    Save Months of Development Time

The integration of hardened floating-point DSP blocks in Altera FPGAs and SoCs can reduce development time by upwards of 12 months. Designers can translate their DSP designs directly into floating-point hardware, rather than converting their designs to fixed point. As a result, timing closure and verification times are dramatically slashed. Altera also provides multiple tool flows that allow hardware designers, model-based designers and software programmers to easily target the high-performance floating-point DSP blocks in its devices.

-- DSP Builder Advanced Blockset offers a model-based design flow that
allows designers to go from system definition and simulation to system
implementation in a matter of minutes using the industry-standard
    MathWorks Simulink tools.
-- For software programmers, Altera pioneered the use of OpenCL for
programming FPGAs and today offers a publicly available C-based,
high-level design flow that targets FPGAs. The Arria 10 FPGA
floating-point DSP blocks combined with an easy-to-use development flow
provide software programmers direct translation to hardware which helps
    reduce development and verification time.

More About Arria 10 FPGAs and SoCs

Based on TSMC 20SoC process technology, Arria 10 FPGAs and SoCs provide the industry's highest capacity and highest DSP resources in a monolithic die. The use of patented redundancy technology enables Altera to build the industry's highest density 20 nm FPGA die containing 1.15 million logic elements (LEs). Arria 10 devices deliver 15 percent higher performance than the fastest 28 nm high-end FPGAs and up to 40 percent lower power than the previous 28 nm Arria family.

20 nm Arria 10 devices are the industry's only FPGAs to feature hardened floating-point DSP blocks, as well as the only 20 nm SoCs that embed a hardened ARM(R) Cortex(R)-A9 processor system into the FPGA fabric. The devices offer 4X more bandwidth versus the previous generation and deliver many other features optimized for high-performance applications. Arria 10 device features include:

-- Serial transceivers operating up to 28.3 Gbps for
    chip-to-chip/chip-to-module interfaces
-- Backplane support up to 17.4 Gbps
-- Up to 96 transceiver channels in a single device
    -- Dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor system
-- Hardened floating point DSP blocks
-- Support for next-generation memories, including DDR4 at an
industry-leading 2666 Mbps and high-speed serial memory support with
    Hybrid Memory Cube interoperability

Altera 20 nm Arria 10 FPGAs with hardened floating-point DSP blocks are available now. Floating-point design flows, including demonstrations and benchmarks, that target the hardened floating-point DSP blocks in Arria 10 devices will be available in the second half of 2014. Customers can start designing today with Arria 10 FPGAs using soft implementations of floating point and then seamlessly migrate to hardened floating point implementation when the design flows are available.
